To ask the Minister for Health further to Parliamentary Question No. 466 of 18 May 2023, if he will confirm that the reduction in the definition of the threshold of foetal viability from 24 weeks to 23 weeks for the purposes of the Civil Registration Act 2004 will also apply to the definition of viability in the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018; if he will outline what amendments to the Act existing policy he proposes in order to implement this change; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018 defines viability as "the point in a pregnancy at which, in the reasonable opinion of a medical practitioner, the foetus is capable of survival outside the uterus without extraordinary life-sustaining measures.”There are no plans to include a specific gestation period in the definition at this time.
