To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if his Department or the Office of Public Works has had any involvement in surveying or preserving the ruins of Tyone Abbey, Tyone, Nenagh, County Tipperary; if his Department or the Office of Public Works have engaged with Tipperary County Council or local landowners in relation to same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While Tyone Abbey is a recorded monument, it is not a National Monument as designated by legislation. As such, it falls outside the statutory remit of the Office of Public Works and this office has no role in the preservation of this property.

The matter of the acquisition of property for the National Monuments State Portfolio is one for the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. If that Department were to consider bringing the Abbey into State care or ownership, the OPW would, of course, undertake the necessary surveys or assessments required to support the State's consideration of same.
