308. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he has spoken to the Ambassador for Saudi Arabia to Ireland in relation to the case of a person (details supplied) who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [33404/22]

I am aware of the case raised. Ireland is opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances, and has made this clear in both bilateral contacts with the Saudi authorities, as well as appropriate international fora.

I raised our opposition to the use of the death penalty directly with the Saudi Foreign Minister when I visited Riyadh in June 2021. Officials from my Department have also regularly raised our opposition to the use of the death penalty with the Saudi authorities.

Ireland has also made our concerns clear publicly, notably in the UN Human Rights Council, where we co-sponsored a Joint Statement condemning the use of the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.

Ireland will continue to make clear our opposition to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances.
