164. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will request the Revenue Commissioners to consider the case of a taxpayer (details supplied) who has been informed that they have a considerable underpayment; if the reason that there is an underpayment in this case can be clearly explained given that they are a PAYE public-transport employee with no other sources of income; if a more suitable arrangement will be put in place for them to pay back any tax owed given their personal circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am advised by Revenue that as a result of a review undertaken on the tax affairs of the taxpayer concerned an underpayment arose. In July 2021 Revenue notified the taxpayer of the underpayment and that the liability would be collected, interest free, by reducing their tax credits over a 4-year period, commencing in January 2022.

Having reviewed the case and taking into account the personal circumstances involved, a Revenue caseworker has made contact with the taxpayer concerned and arranged to extend the period over which the liability will be collected to a period of six years.
