163. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the protocol that is in place for the re-use of computer hardware when it is replaced or upgraded within his Department and the bodies under the aegis of his Department; his plans to ensure that this complies with the forthcoming Circular Economy and Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2022; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department contracts an accredited electronic waste disposal service provider to securely collect all old computer hardware. The service provider is committed to continuously working to reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste. Where possible, old computer hardware is refurbished and offered for resale. When this is not possible, all components are recycled in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. My Department will ensure that the current service provider, or any similar future service providers, will also comply with any relevant aspects of the forthcoming Circular Economy and Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2022.

My Department does not keep details of the computer hardware waste management practices in place in the agencies under the remit of my Department. I have asked those agencies for those details, and will forward them to the Deputy separately.
