173. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if she has plans to amend the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015 to include in the Act a definition of client in order to ensure that persons adversely affected by what they consider an inadequate standard of legal services can make a complaint to the Legal Services Regulatory Authority; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Legal Services Regulatory Authority is independent in its regulation of the legal professions under the terms of the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015 and in its administration of the public complaints regime.
Without any detailed proposal to consider I can only confirm that there are no immediate plans to amend the definition of a client. However, I can say that there is an ongoing statutory review of the operation of the 2015 Act being completed under section 6 of that Act, which can take such matters into account.
