193. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if Bus Éireann will be reconsidering its online pre-booking system in view of the fact that those with valid open returns and those with free travel passes are being made to wait and have no idea whether they will get a seat on a bus or not; if he will consider scrapping the €2 charge applied to those travelling on a travel pass particularly when Iarnród Éireann does not have such a charge; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I am responsible for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. However, I am not involved in day-to-day operational matters. The Free Travel Scheme is a non-statutory scheme administered by the Department of Social Protection.
The query raised appears to relate to Bus Éireann's commercial service, Expressway, and I have therefore forwarded the Deputy's question to the company for direct reply.
Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.
