337. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the financial position of the CIÉ pension schemes both the regular wages scheme and any other scheme affected; if the CIÉ group withdrew funds from this scheme in 1994; if that funding has ever been restored; if the assurances given to CIÉ workers in 1987 on the division of the company into three bodies will be honoured, specifically in relation to pension provisions in the three subsidiary companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport in Ireland.
The CIÉ Group has two pension schemes, namely the Regular Wages Scheme (“RWS”) and 1951 superannuation scheme (“1951 Scheme”). Issues in relation to CIÉ pension schemes are primarily a matter for the trustees of the schemes, the CIÉ Group and their employees.
I have therefore referred the Deputy’s question to CIÉ for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.
