183. To ask the Minister for Finance if he has considered reassessing the method by which motor tax is calculated to a system by which the cars that produce more harmful exhausts are liable for more tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11098/21]

Motor tax for passenger cars is calculated on the car's emissions. Cars with higher CO2emissions pay higher rates of motor tax.

The basis of assessment for the motor tax regime changed in Budget 2021 to WLTP CO2emissions. A new rates table with an increased number of bands and a stronger environmental rationale was introduced in line with Government emissions reduction policy. I am satisfied with the current motor tax regime.
