To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the circumstances in which her Department may request that a person hand up their passport and retain this passport for up to 21 days; the Act under which such a decision is made; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am not aware of any specific powers within the social welfare code under which my Department would require a person to surrender their passport. If the Deputy is aware of a particular case, perhaps he would let me have the details and I will arrange to have the matter investigated.
