To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if she will withdraw the licence issued to Dublin Airport Authority which allows for hares to be shot dead on airport property and instead insist on a capture and relocate approach in view of growing concerns regarding the future of the Irish hare. The National Parks and Wildlife Service of my Department has issued a number of permits in recent years under the Wildlife Acts to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) to remove hares from the Dublin Airport airfield due to potential damage to aircraft and the threat to passenger safety.   My Department has also issued permits to the DAA to cull hares at the airport due to the increase in number of hares in the airfield.  Permits are required from the Department as hares are protected species under the Wildlife Acts. It is the case that the majority of hares are captured and relocated to a number of locations.
