There were a total of 8,357 students enrolled on PhD programmes in the 2016/17 academic year. Of this figure, year one enrollments were 1,537 full-time PhD students and 269 part-time PhD students. Final figures for the 2017/18 academic year are not yet available.
PhD funded scholarships are available from a number of bodies, including the Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board etc. The Irish Research Council, which is funded by my Department currently funds some 838 PhD students.
