489. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if his attention has been drawn to violations of EU transport regulations by trucks transporting livestock from Rosslare (details supplied); if his Department is carrying out an investigation into these alleged violations; if sanctions will be imposed upon the companies involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am aware of the recent investigation by Eyes on Animals on a number of transporters from different countries leaving Rosslare port. I wish to assure the Deputy that in relation to the Irish trucks involved, a thorough investigation has taken place into the circumstances of the journeys undertaken. This was carried out in conjunction with the French authorities. Penalties have been applied to those who were found to have breached regulations.
Furthermore, I wish to assure the Deputy that the Irish authorities continue to apply stringent standards in respect of the welfare of animals during transport.
