318. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of vehicles that support plain-clothes gardaí in each of the Dublin metropolitan regions; his plans to roll out new vehicles to support these officers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18097/18]

As the Deputy will appreciate, decisions in relation to the provision and allocation of Garda vehicles and resources are a matter for the Garda Commissioner in light of his identified operational demands and the availability of resources. As Minister, I have no direct role in the matter.

I understand from the Garda authorities that Garda management keeps the distribution of resources under continual review in the context of crime trends and policing priorities, to ensure that the optimum use is made of these resources.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the strength of the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) unmarked Garda fleet as on 23 April 2018 is outlined in the following table.

In addition to the vehicles referred to in the table, I have been informed that a further 13 unmarked cars are due to be allocated to the DMR in 2018 on a prioritised basis as determined by the Assistant Commissioner DMR.
