511. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of sworn members of An Garda Síochána that were disciplined for internal Garda breaches in 2017; the percentage of the overall strength of the force that this figure represents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Deputy will appreciate that disciplinary matters within An Garda Síochána are governed by the Garda Síochána Act 2005 and the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations 2007 and are a matter for the Garda Commissioner.
I have been advised by the Commissioner that in 2017 there were 145 members of An Garda Síochána found in breach of discipline following internal discipline investigations under the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations 2007.
This figure represents just over 1% of the overall strength of An Garda Síochána.
