140. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the preparedness of his Department in the context of the incoming general data protection regulation, GDPR, EU 2016/679; if staff in his Department have undertaken or been offered specific training and-or briefing on the GDPR; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department is actively working towards GDPR compliance. The Department has established a Data Protection Support and Compliance Office headed by a Principal Officer (the Department’s designated Data Protection Officer). The DPSC Office is working across divisions and relevant agencies to lead the implementation of systems and policies in compliance with the GDPR requirements.
Over the past year a number of briefing sessions have been held for senior managers whose divisions hold significant volumes of personal data. Work has been undertaken to identify the most appropriate e-learning training package available with the intention of delivering GDPR specific training to staff across the organisation ahead of May 25. More specialised training needs are also receiving attention. In support of these measures, the Department will also roll out a internal communications plan to raise awareness of the GDPR and its implications.
