216. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the way in which the Garda traffic corps will be restored to full operational strength; his views on the deployment of the corps to invigilate speeding on the M50 and other motorways around Dublin, on national roads especially in western counties and on regional roads around the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy will appreciate, it is the Garda Commissioner who is responsible for the distribution of resources, including personnel, among the various Garda Divisions and I, as Minister, have no direct role in the matter. Garda management keeps this distribution of resources under continual review in the context of crime trends and policing priorities so as to ensure that the optimum use is made of these resources.

I have requested a report from the Garda Commissioner in relation to this matter and I will write directly to the Deputy when the report is to hand.
