My recent visit to the US West Coast was focused primarily on developing trade, investment and tourism opportunities between the US and Ireland.
While in Seattle and San Francisco, I met informally with a number of Irish community organisations which provide excellent supports to Irish immigrants in the US, including undocumented Irish citizens. However, on this visit I did not hold formal political-level discussions on the issues facing the undocumented.
I remain involved in and appraised of ongoing high level political and diplomatic engagement on the issue, led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney, and supported by Deputy John Deasy T.D., and the Embassy and Consulate teams in the United States.
The issue of the undocumented Irish in the US will be high on my agenda when I travel to the United States in March 2018.
