1079. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if car sellers are permitted to install devices commonly referred to as kill switches which are designed to immobile vehicles if borrowers fail to make payments on a car finance loan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While I am not aware of such devices or their use in the circumstances outlined by the Deputy, I would have concerns from a road safety perspective if such a device had the ability to be remotely utilised whilst the vehicle was in motion and without prior notification to the registered owner or the driver of the vehicle at that time. I would invite the Deputy to write to me with any specific information that he may have regarding the use of such devices and I will have the legality or otherwise of their use examined.
