170. To ask the Minister for Social Protection if he will address his recent comments regarding restricting the right to strike in essential services; his views on whether such a restriction would be a breach of Ireland's international human rights obligations, for example, under the European Convention on Human Rights; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have no intention to remove employees’ right to strike. However where a dispute is in an essential service, a strike can give rise to huge disruption for the public. It is my view that, it is in the interests of the public, employees and employers, such disputes should be resolved with the least disruption.
