665. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the status of the flood relief measures in place near Ballinagare Bridge, Ballyduff at which pumps installed by the OPW that operate to drain approximately 1,000 acres of land to the nearby river are not currently working; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The pumps referred to by the Deputy were installed and are maintained by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for the purpose of providing outfall during the farming (summer grazing) period, generally for 6 to 7 months of the year. They are not intended for use outside of this period, except in the event of low-lying properties being at risk during a flood event.

The pumps have been in operation over the last few weeks. There have been some difficulties with electricity supply to this remote site and the OPW is progressing a long-term solution with regard to power supply to the pumps.
