185. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason the accommodation capacity for a school (details supplied) to increase school pupil numbers beyond the overall projected figure of 1,000 has been rejected by his Department and the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board and informed to hold numbers at this amount. I wish to advise the Deputy that there are 11 second level schools serving the catchment area in question. Two new schools, including the school to which the Deputy refers, have been established in recent years in response to the emerging demographic demands.
Of the 11 schools in the area, four schools will have building projects completed as part of the Departments Major Construction Programme. In addition, four further schools have had significant capital projects completed in recent years. My Department is satisfied that there is sufficient capacity to meet the demand for school places in the catchment area concerned. This may sometimes, however, lead to pupils not being offered a place in their school of first preference.
