To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government the actions the Government has taken with regard to the international emissions scandal surrounding a company (details supplied); if the Government has considered the motor tax implications for the company and other connected models as a consequence of the findings of the US EPA; the investigation of its own the Government has set up to investigate if the company's cars on sale here actually comply with EU emissions standards; if models for sale here achieve the emissions savings outlined in their marketing; if the Government has taken steps to investigate whether the emissions levels advertised by motor manufacturers are actually tested and actually meet their standards in real time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has no function in the matter raised, save for motor tax. The motor tax system in Ireland for private vehicles registered from July 2008 is based on carbon dioxide emissions (CO₂), whereas the matter referred to in the Question relates to nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. There are, therefore, no implications for the motor tax system.
