164. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government if there are plans to give the entire motor tax income taken in by Cavan and Monaghan county councils on a yearly basis back to the local authorities in full to help maintain roads in both counties; if this will be reviewed in order that councils can be assisted in providing adequate infrastructure in their respective areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Income from motor tax income accrues to the Local Government Fund. With effect from 1 January 2008, responsibility for local and regional roads was transferred to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTaS). An arrangement between my Department and DTTaS provides that funding in respect of roads and sustainable transport infrastructure is channelled from the Local Government Fund to that Department. Responsibility for the allocation of this funding to local authorities is a matter for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport. There are currently no plans to alter these arrangements.
