53. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality her plans to make changes in the procedures for identification parades in order to abolish the requirement for the victims of crime to be present in the same room as the suspects; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [32252/16]

In consultation with the Garda Síochána my Department is examining the procedures for conducting identification parades. Alternative procedures which are used in some other countries provide for identification by electronic means. However any changes in these procedures must have regard to the rights of accused persons to be fully informed of the evidence against them, and the procedures must be fully objective and fair. The introduction of any alternative procedures would be likely to require legislative provision.
