163. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the number of universities that currently provide a residence for their president; if he is aware of any universities in the process of purchasing such properties; if such expenditure is an appropriate use of public funds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. At present four Universities provide residences for their Presidents. I am not aware of any University in the process of or planning to purchase such properties. The use of a residence for official purposes was dealt with by the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector, and the provision of residences by Universities is operated in line with the recommendations of that Body.
