299. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if he will award financial assistance to make a family-owned home habitable and therefore remove persons from a council housing list, in the context of a person who is on a list and is availing of rent supplement but who has access to a family home in great need of refurbishment. My Department provides grant assistance to Local Authorities under a scheme known as the Improvement Works in Lieu (of Local Authority Housing) Scheme. This enables the authorities to repair, improve or extend privately-owned houses occupied or intended to be occupied by an approved housing applicant, as an alternative to the provision of local authority housing.
The administration of the scheme, including the assessment of applications, is a matter for each local authority.
