211. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if local authorities will endeavour to meet the housing requirements of those already in emergency accommodation or those who are homeless and awaiting such accommodation, such as families living apart with various relatives, with consequent disruption to the needs of children; if urgent consideration will be given to such families as a priority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department’s role in relation to homelessness involves the provision of a national framework of policy, legislation and funding to underpin the role of housing authorities in addressing homelessness at local level. Statutory responsibility in relation to the provision of accommodation for homeless persons rests with individual housing authorities. My Department has no involvement in operational matters, such as those raised in the Question, which are a matter for the relevant housing authorities.
