The following table shows the total cost to my Department, for the procurement of legal services from 2011 to 2December 2015:

1 January – 2 December 2015€298.743.72
1 January – 31 December 2014€27,336.75
1 January – 31 December 2013€394,082.38
1 January – 31 December 2012€612,643.88
1 January – 31 December 2011€578,994.01
My Department seeks, where possible, to minimise legal costs and has adopted a number of measures to achieve this. The Department/offices avail of the services of the Chief State Solicitor's office and the Attorney General's office in terms of the provision of legal advice and in terms of representation of the Department/offices in Court cases. The services of legal cost accountants are availed of where fees demanded appear to be high.

The issue of procurement of legal services by Agencies under my remit is a day-to-day matter for the individual Agencies concerned, for which I have no direct function.

I have asked all Agencies under the aegis of my Department to advise me of any procurement of legal services forthe dates concerned, and I will communicate that information to the Deputy as soon as it is available.
