To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government the position regarding the entitlement of British citizens, who are long-term resident here, to vote in a general election; if their entitlement is influenced by either being married or not being married to an Irish citizen; if any specific documentation is necessary, such as a voter's registration form; if he will provide details of a British citizen's entitlement to vote in various elections and referenda; and if he will make a statement on the matter. British citizens resident in the State may vote at Dáil, European Parliament and local elections if they are entered in the register of electors for a constituency in the State in which they ordinarily reside. Only Irish citizens are entitled to vote at referendums. The marital status of any person does not have any bearing on these entitlements. To be entered in the register of electors, a British citizen, ordinarily resident in the State, must make the necessary application to their local authority.
