355. To ask the Minister for Defence if his Department or agencies under the authority of his Department have performed an assessment of the potential savings to be accrued, if current paper-based application processes by members of the public were replaced with a fully online application system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department does not provide services to external ‘customers’ in the classic sense. For example, there are no public offices or public counters where the public can request services on demand. There are a small number of paper based applications processes operated by the Department. These would include applications for disability pensions, applications for Medal certificates/posthumous medals for War of Independence and sheep branding applications. Given that the level of applications received annually is relatively low the Department is satisfied that the current paper based process is the most practical in terms of the administration of these processes.
