To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government when a decision will be made on whether a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan will be made to retire, or if other arrangements will be made; if his Department recognises that it has responsibility for this issue; if representations have been received on this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Representations have previously been received by my Department on this matter and were responded to. With regard to local authority employment, the position is that since the enactment of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004, the minimum age at which pensions will be payable to new entrants to the public service, from 1 April 2004, is age 65 and there is no compulsory retirement age. For staff who are not ‘New Entrants’ as defined in that Act, a pension is generally payable from age 60 with a compulsory retirement age of 65.

In relation to the retirement age of public sector employees, this is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform.

The State Pension (Transition) which had been payable at 65, was abolished on 1 January 2014 and is a matter for my colleague, the Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection.
