636. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the chief executive of Sligo County Council has recommended that the council provide financial assistance of €45,000 to Ireland West Airport Knock in County Mayo; if his Department plans to provide matching funds for the airport; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is a matter for each local authority to determine its own spending priorities in the context of the annual budgetary process having regard to both locally identified needs and available resources. The elected members of a local authority have direct responsibility in law for all reserved functions of the authority, which includes adopting the annual budget, and are democratically accountable for all expenditure by the local authority. It is not my intention to provide matching funding as outlined in the Question as I have no function in relation to this matter. Matters relating to airports are the responsibility of the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport.
