I propose to take Questions Nos. 518 and 519 together.

I have sought the detailed views of an Garda Síochána in relation to the matter raised by the Deputy and I will be in contact directly when information is available.

We can only hope that something is done, finally to solve this problem. A simple but effective solution would be the introduction of a revenue commissioner's seal as it is Revenue who are responsible for number plate legislation and enforcement in the State. The seal would be affixed to all road legal plates (as is done with cigarettes at present) and it would be illegal to drive a vehicle without the seal. The registration plates would be inspected/administered through the NCTS.
