498. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills further to Parliamentary Question No. 492 of 30 September 2014 the progress made with regard to the introduction of a politics and society module to the leaving certificate curriculum; if she will provide a brief outline of the outstanding issues highlighted by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, as outlined in her response to that question; if these issues have been addressed; if a deadline has been set for the implementation of this subject in schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I have requested that the NCCA include Politics and Society in their workplan. Based on their advice, it is intended that the new Leaving Certificate subject, Politics and Society, will be trialled in an initial cohort of schools who will express interest and capacity in trialling this subject from September 2016.

The impact of the trial will be considered and then a decision will be taken in relation to rolling the specification out nationally thereafter.
