Circular Letter 0010/2011 issued by my Department outlines the procedures regarding the career break scheme for registered teachers in recognised primary and post primary schools. In accordance with the circular a teacher seeking a career break must submit a written application to the managerial authority of his/her school and the managerial authority must issue a written notice of approval or refusal to the teacher. Such applications are not received by my Department however the managerial authorities of Primary, Voluntary Secondary, Community and Comprehensive Schools submit notice of all career break approvals to my Department each year via the On Line Claims System.

The number of career break approvals submitted to my Department by managerial authorities of above schools in respect of the past four academic years are as follows:

YearPrimary|Post-Primary
2010/11789247
2011/121042269
2012/131229 307
2013/141361 354

The number of applications approved by the Education and Training Board sector are not submitted to my Department.
