297. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if any of the applicants who were successful in reaching the later stages of the recent Garda recruitment process will be considered in further rounds of recruiting in the future; if those applicants will be recognised for successfully completing the initial rounds of the process in future selection; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Deputy will be aware that the Public Appointments Service are managing this recruitment process on behalf of An Garda Síochána and I have no direct involvement in the matter. Candidates who are ultimately successful through all stages of the competitive process will be placed on a panel for entry into training in the Garda College. A candidate who fails any stage of the process will be eliminated from the competition and will not be allowed re-enter.

The Deputy will be aware that the first intake since 2009 of 100 new recruits entered training at the Garda College in Templemore on Monday 15th September 2014. This marked a positive step forward for policing in Ireland. It is my intention that there will be ongoing recruitment and I am discussing the details of this with my colleague the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform.
