Children are eligible for transport where they reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest education centre as determined by the Department/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language.
In certain areas, families who choose to send their children to schools other than their nearest diminish the chance of a service being established to their nearest school. Families of eligible pupils, for whom there is no school transport service available, are eligible for the remote area grant towards the cost of making private transport arrangements.
The position remains the same as outlined in Parliamentary Question No. 189 of 1 July 2014, since this child is not attending his nearest school, he is therefore not eligible under the school transport scheme.
I understand this child is currently availing of transport on a concessionary basis.
