73. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the position regarding a child who will be starting post-primary school in September where there is no school transport to their nearest second level school; if special concessions will be made to ensure a place on a school bus to an alternative school that passes this person's home; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the terms of my Department's Post Primary School Transport Scheme children are eligible for school transport where they reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest education centre as determined by my Department/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language. Children who are not eligible for school transport may apply for transport on a concessionary basis only subject to a number of terms and conditions including the availability of spare seats on an existing service and payment of the annual charge.

The family in question should liaise with their local Bus Éireann office if they wish to avail of transport on a concessionary basis for the 2014/15 school year.

The terms of the School Transport Schemes are applied equitably on a national basis.
