To ask the Minister for Social Protection further to Parliamentary Question No. 332 of 10 June 2014, the number of persons investigated for cross-jurisdictional fraud as part of the Cross-Border Operational Forum operating under the Memorandum of Understanding in the years 2012, 2013 and to date in 2014; and if there any figures available on the level of Exchequer savings achieved as part any such investigations. The Cross Border Operational Forum comprises of senior fraud managers from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Forum’s remit is to ensure that effective co-operation takes place at an operational level to prevent and detect fraud between the three jurisdictions. Case by case co-operation takes place between fraud investigators from all three jurisdictions. The Forum does not record the outcome of cases investigated by individual officers.

In 2013, approximately 4,500 checks were carried out by the Department of Social Development (DSD) Northern Ireland on behalf of the Department of Social Protection (DSP) and 2,942 checks were carried out by the DSP on behalf of the DSD. However, it is important to note that these cases may be in order when checked and, therefore, may not be an indicator of fraud.
