441. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government his views on the need to restructure commercial vehicle road tax in order to bring costs for the Irish haulage sector in line with those in Northern Ireland and other European countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport has established an Inter-Departmental Working Group on issues relating to the Irish haulage industry which includes representation from, inter alia, my Department. The Working Group’s discussions are on-going at present. Any restructuring of motor taxation for vehicles used by the haulage sector would need to take account of the impacts on other motor tax payers as well as the impact on income to the Local Government Fund and, consequently, on the provision of local services. Such a change can only place in the context of the outcome of the work of the Inter-Departmental Working Group.
