964. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will review the arrangements for the motor taxation payable by lorries and HGVs here in view of the fact that it is much higher here than in Northern Ireland and also when lorries from here travel north they have to pay €10 per day but the same does not happen in reverse which is a commercial disadvantage to truckers operating here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. An inter-departmental working group has been established to examine the feasibility of introducing a pay-as-you-go road tax scheme for HGVs in Ireland, similar to that which has been recently introduced in the United Kingdom.  The group is due to report to Government by the middle of this year with its recommendations.  In the interim reform of the existing motor tax regime is a matter for the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government.
