121. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government his plans to create a licensing regulatory authority for the establishment and operation of cemeteries and crematoria, which could also have a remit in regulating the provision of headstones, grave sculptures and monuments. A decision on whether or not to create a new authority for the establishment and operation of cemeteries and crematoria , including regulating the provision of headstones etc, would have to be soundly based on the need for such an authority, Government policy on regulatory impact and my Department’s legislative priorities. I have no plans at present to create such a new authority.

The establishment and operation of such services and businesses are currently subject, where applicable, to the provisions of legislation dealing with planning and development, environmental protection and air pollution.
