61. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills further to Parliamentary Question No. 231 of 8 April 2014, in view of the fact that he has accepted that there is no need for workbooks in schools, if he has told teachers to discontinue the use of these workbooks which are a huge expense and burden on parents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As stated in a previous reply to the Deputy, it is a matter for the Board of Management of each individual school to decide on its own school policy regarding whether or not workbooks should be used in schools. Therefore, I have not told teachers to discontinue the use of these workbooks but I have ensured that a number of strategies to avoid the need for workbooks or to allow workbooks to be re-used from year to year are included in the Guidelines for Developing Textbook Rental Schemes in Schools.
