To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his views regarding funding for young athletes representing their country in major international events; if there are grants to support children to attend these events and appeals for sponsor; and his views on whether when a young person is selected to represent their country in major international events the State pay all or a percentage of the costs, particularly young people in households who have low incomes coming into their household. The Irish Sports Council, which is funded by my Department, is the statutory body with responsibility for the promotion, development and co-ordination of sport, including the allocation of funding to athletes.
I have referred the Deputy's question to the Irish Sports Council for direct reply. I would ask the Deputy to inform my office if a reply is not received within 10 days.
