73. To ask the Minister for Health if he is satisfied with the level of accommodation, staffing levels, implementation of national protocols, equipment, professional training and development for personnel in the maternity unit at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, County Laois; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy may be aware, in light of reports of a number of perinatal deaths at Portlaoise hospital in recent years, I have asked the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide me with a report on the issues arising. Pending completion of that report, it would not be appropriate for me to make any comment regarding facilities or services at the hospital. I can however assure the Deputy that the CMO’s report will be completed as expeditiously as possible.
