211. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if he will provide in tabular form the total number of junior infants admitted to schools in September 2013 (details supplied); the total still on the admissions list when applications were complete in September 2013, that is those who enrolled that the schools were unable to accommodate; and the total applicants, to date, for junior infants for September 2014. It is the responsibility of the managerial authorities of all schools to implement an enrolment policy in accordance with the Education Act, 1998. In this regard a Board of Management may find it necessary to restrict enrolment to children from a particular area or a particular age group or on the basis of some other criterion. The criteria to be applied by schools in such circumstances are a matter for the schools themselves. This selection process and the enrolment policy on which it is based must be non-discriminatory and must be applied fairly in respect of all applicants.

Enrolment is dealt with at local school level and my Department therefore does not hold data centrally in relation to school admission applications. My Department's Statistics Section publishes statistical information each September in relation to teacher and pupil numbers in all primary schools. This also includes a breakdown by class group of the number of pupils in each primary school. The last published data relates to the 2012/13 school year. The data relating to all primary schools for the 2013/14 school year is due for publication in September 2014.
