255. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if he will consider introducing a national community hedge-cutting grant scheme and-or provide support to local authorities that wish to initiate such a scheme to assist landowners and community groups in maintaining hedgerows; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has no plans to introduce a national community hedge-cutting grant scheme. Regarding a local authority initiative, it is a matter for each local authority to determine its own spending priorities in the context of the annual budgetary process having regard both to locally identified needs and available resources.
