To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the progress of legislation to deal with media ownership which will promote diversity and prevent monopolies; if he has had discussions with the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on the matter; and when such legislation will be introduced into the legislative process. The purpose of the proposed Consumer Protection and Competition Bill is, amongst other things, to implement the recommendations of the Advisory Group on Media Mergers. Work is at an advanced stage on the drafting of the Bill and it is hoped to finalise it before the end of the year.
Given the proposed transfer of responsibility for the public interest test in relation to media mergers to the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, my officials are working closely with officials from that Department and the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel in the matter.
