Ms Emily Logan has agreed to conduct an independent inquiry into the cases referred to by the Deputy and I will be appointing her in accordance with Section 42 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended by section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007) to ensure that she has the appropriate powers to conduct a comprehensive Inquiry. The necessary arrangements for this Inquiry are currently being finalised and Ms Logan has been furnished with a copy of a full Report into this matter that has been submitted to me by the Commissioner of An Garda Síochána.
The Deputy will appreciate that, in circumstances where an independent inquiry into these matters is to be carried out, it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this time.
